At 18th Street Design Collective, we’re excited to feature Amabel, one of our talented designers whose work combines creativity, sustainability, and a focus on human connection.
Amabel’s Design Journey
Amabel’s design journey began with her deep appreciation for art and sustainability. Originally from the Dominican Republic, she moved to Spain to study sustainable design, which provided her with a new perspective on how design can positively impact both individuals and society. Now based in New York, Amabel blends her expertise in sustainable design with a focus on enhancing well-being, creating spaces that are both functional and transformative.
Design Philosophy and Influences
Amabel is driven by the belief that design should improve the way people live. Her approach focuses on fostering connection, promoting health, and creating environments that nurture both the mind and body. She strives to create spaces that are not only beautiful and functional but also contribute to the overall well-being of those who inhabit them.
A Recent Project: Brooklyn Apartment
Amabel’s design of a recent apartment project is a great example of her ability to create spaces that cater to both practical needs and emotional connection. The homeowners, a couple working in tech, wanted a home that reflected their passions and lifestyle. Music and their two cats were central to the design, and Amabel incorporated elements that allowed both to seamlessly fit into their space.
The in-home office was carefully designed to support their work while allowing the couple to stay connected with their cats. Amabel created a cat wall, providing an area where the cats could interact with the environment and feel part of the family’s day-to-day activities.
The couple also loved music, so Amabel made sure to incorporate a piano into the living room, positioning it where its sound could flow throughout the space. This not only enhanced the acoustics of the room but also created an inviting atmosphere that supported the couple’s musical passions.
In the dining area, Amabel focused on creating a space that could accommodate the couple’s social gatherings, such as game nights with friends. She chose a durable dining table from Calligaris that could comfortably seat 4-6 people, using materials that were resilient enough to withstand frequent use without compromising on style.
The neutral color palette, with greys, beiges, and soft green and orange accents, tied the space together. Geometric patterns were introduced through textiles, rugs, and artwork, creating visual interest and a dynamic flow throughout the apartment.
Amabel also paid special attention to the acoustics and lighting. She worked with Lutron to install motorized drapes and shades to control natural light, and incorporated warm-toned lighting from Seed Design to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Sound-absorbing rugs from Kalora and Calligaris ensured that the space remained peaceful and conducive to both work and relaxation.
The final result was a home that told the couple’s story through thoughtful design choices that blended their personal interests, practical needs, and aesthetic preferences into one cohesive, harmonious space.
